You wax the thread to keep it from knotting up on you. There are many different stitches that can be used when making a book, this book was sewn with linked stitches and kettle stitches on the ends.

Sewing the sections

But how do you push that needle through all those pieces of paper without causing yourself massive blood loss???
You make the holes first with an awl then sew through the hole. I'll get a picture of that step up later this afternoon!
I love step by step stuff on blogs. It makes the process much more interesting. I'm doing this with glass. (an your photos are great).
