Sweet Music

Music is the theme for my local bookarts exchange this month and as I've always wanted to learn to make a piano hinge book, so I did! My first attempt is the top book with the music notes on the cover, that one is going to the exchange, the bottom I'm not sure what I'll do with. I'm still not happy with the cover attachment on either book. For the first I looped a skewer through just the cover and for the second I folded in the extra sections. I don't love either but can't seem to find a work around that I like- I'm also not sure which I like better at this point either.
Anyone out there have experience with these and care to chime in with advice?

In other book happenings I got another pair of my book earrings photographed and listed in my Etsy store. For some reason they are an absolute bear to photograph. Even with my macro lens they aren't in focus or comeout over exposed and washed out. The black backdrop seems to help some with the over exposing but as you can see from the little pic here it still happens pretty bad. It's on the agenda of things to find a work around for later this week. I've got to make it through midterms this week first!

I've got reaction mechanisims to get back to, I just wanted to share my piano hinge books despite the cover issues I really like them!

I make the book earrings too (since seeing them at the Guild of Book Workers meeting last year), but mine aren't as cute as yours -- but I agree, a total pain to photograph. I use Himself's D60, which does so much better than my old camera (even on "flower" close-up setting), but it's not really all that great.

as for the piano hinge cover attachment... before I read your post and just saw that it was about the piano hinge binding i thought "oh yeah, i tried that once, but never liked the cover attachments..."

Thanks both of you!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one having a bugger of a time with the earrings and the piano hinge.

It's really too bad the cover attachments are wonky because it is actually a fun little structure and I really like how the pages open and turn.

Hi Kiley

I have only made one piano hinge book. I got on ok after a remake for the pages them selves but my problem is the weaving on the skewers, I find they slip around too much. I will one day take it apart again and have another go.

Here is the tutorial I followed for my book if it is any help to you...

Maybe they are one of those binds that you have to pay your dues for, ie make loads and learn a little with each one grr heheh

Thanks Billie- I've seen that tutorial as well and wasn't very happy with it either...
They don't have all the sections attached so they end up with even cover attachments. I know that doesn't make a ton of since without seeing the directions I have but with the ones I have you don't use the end thread to hold it all together, as its already all woven together.

I had some problems with the skewers at first and found out that if you make your holes a tad bigger they thread with no problems.
